GTR wurde 1985 nach dem Ausscheiden von Gitarrist Steve Howe aus ASIA gegründet. Zusammen mit dem ebenso legendären Gitarristen Steve Hackett wurde GTR mit dem Sänger Max Bacon, dem Bassisten Phil Spalding und dem Schlagzeuger Jonathan Mover vervollständigt.
Das einzige Album der Band wurde von Geoff Downes produziert und im Juli 1986 veröffentlicht. Es erreichte in den USA die Top 20 und auch in Großbritannien die Top 50. Zwei Singles aus dem Album („When the Heart Rules the Mind“ und „The Hunter“) waren ebenfalls Hits in den USA. Obwohl die Band nur kurzlebig war, tourte GTR zur Promotion des Albums (mit Matt Clifford am Keyboard) und spielte Material aus dem Album sowie Songs wie „Roundabout“ und „I Know What I Like (in Your Wardrobe)“, die von YES bzw. GENESIS bekannt wurden. Diese Esoteric Recordings-Ausgabe wurde neu gemastert und enthält zusätzlich eine Bonus-CD mit 14 Tracks von GTR live in Los Angeles im Juli 1986. Außerdem gibt es drei Bonus-Tracks von Promo-12-Zoll-Singles von „When the Heart Rules the Mind“ und „The Hunter“.
