Schon seit dem Debüt in 2012 weiß man, dass selbst Menschen mit einer ausgeprägten Neal-Morse-Allergie bei Flying Colors kaum Symptome zeigen. Anders als bei allen anderen Projekten, an denen der omnipräsente Ex-Bart beteiligt ist, verschont er diese All-Star-Truppe mit seiner kompletten heiligen Durchleuchtung. Auch kompositorisch bleibt dem Hörer der inzwischen oft schablonenhafte Gebrauchs-Prog seiner Solo-Alben erspart. Auf der Bühne zeigt diese Formation gleich zu Beginn mit ‘Blue Ocean’, dass man gekommen ist um zu rocken. Die Stücke klingen deutlich rauer als auf den Studio Alben. Gerade in Sachen Keyboards kann das gut gefallen. Casey McPhersons Lead Gesang hat da und dort jedoch einen etwas angestrengten Unterton. Auch den Klang der Lead-Gitarre von Steve Morse hat man zuletzt bei Deep Purple deutlich voluminöser gehört. Andererseits möchte man auch kein glattpoliertes Pseudo-Live-Album hören. Also: “Deal with it, it’s live” Im ersten Teil des Konzerts konzentriert man sich auf die kompakteren Songs, die mehr im AOR und Hard Rock angesiedelt sind. Durchhänger braucht man keine zu befürchten. Im zweiten Teil sind, bis auf den Rausschmeißer “The Storm”, nur noch Epics auf der Setlist. Diesen Stücken drückt Neal Morse deutlicher stärker seinen Stempel auf. Die Reaktionen des Londoner Publikums bestätigen: Das sind die Fan-Favoriten. Textlich wird zum Cinemascope-Breitwand-Prog mehrmals ganz fest der Pathos-Button gedrückt. Man liebt es oder man liebt es nicht. Auch über den VÖ-Rhythmus Studioalbum/Livealbum/Studioalbum/Livealbum/… lässt sich streiten. Doch möglicherweise gehört das heutzutage zur Überlebensstrategie von Rockbands. Der Spaßfaktor für Fans ist bei “Third Stage: Live In London” jedenfalls hoch, auch weil die beiliegende DVD den Zuschauer nahe an die Musiker und ihre Finger bringt.
